Gary and Carla have been competing in triathlons for the past 19 years. With well over 100 triathlon finishes including 15 Ironman’s Gary and Carla enjoy a healthy lifestyle that has allowed them to travel, meet new friends, and have amazing adventures. They came to the sport from different backgrounds. Carla was a runner with a little bit of swim training. Gary was a recreational cyclist who never had a swim lesson.
Ramping up for their first triathlons was a real eye opener. Carla had her childhood swim lessons to fall back on, Gary on the other hand had no formal instruction. They got some help from friends and progressed from non-swimmer to beginner level. Training on their own, their endurance was improving but their speed wasn’t. Once they started attending CTSM that all changed. Within the first few months they both dropped about 15 seconds off their hundred pace. They were also doing it much more efficiently. This is important in triathlon since the more energy you can save in the water the more you have available for the bike and run. The improvement in their swim stroke has motivated Gary and Carla to push themselves even harder in the pool.
Consistent swimming with Coach Christine has paid dividends at the races. Carla swept her age group at the LA Tri Series in 2013 and set PR’s at the Ironman Distance. Gary earned some podium finishes and proved that one can continue to improve even beyond age 50. They were both selected as Legacy athletes for the 2014 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. After nearly 20 years they continue to have a passion for competing, setting new goals, and living a healthy lifestyle. Expect to see them at a triathlon, open water swim, or marathon for many years to come.
